Severance Field,
John Harris High School

Harrisburg, PA

New Construction
5,500 Seats

The John Harris High School stadium was aging, inadequate, and in bad need of a renovation yet the district could not interrupt scheduled events for construction.

Hayes Large Architects devised a phasing plan that would allow for continuous operation. The design team first replaced the existing natural grass field with an all-weather, infilled synthetic turf system, expediting the construction to occur between events at the stadium. The new surface gives the district flexibility by allowing multiple activities to take place on the field during the same season.

Next, the design team turned to a new field house with an indoor synthetic turf practice area, weight training room, locker rooms, offices, classrooms, concessions, ticket sales and restrooms. Hayes Large then completed the project with construction of new grandstands, and a press box.

Throughout all the phases, Hayes Large’s design respects the historical significance of the high school’s urban site.
